Griham: A May Meditation on Warmth, Slow Living, and Coming Home

There is a particular kind of morning that arrives only in May.

Not the cool of early autumn, which still carries a memory of summer. And not the full weight of winter, which announces itself loudly. May is softer than both. It arrives like a quiet suggestion, that the world is asking you to slow down, to turn inward, to come home.

I felt it this morning, as I do every year at this time, somewhere between the first cup of tea and the moment I pulled the quilt a little closer. There was something in the quality of the light, golden and low, falling across the bed at an angle it hasn't found since last year that felt deeply, wordlessly familiar.

In Sanskrit, we have a word for this feeling... Griham.

It does not simply mean a house, or even a home. Griham is the feeling of arriving. The warmth of a familiar room. The weight of something known and loved pulling you back.  It is, I have always believed, one of the most quietly powerful words in any language.

And May, in Australia and New Zealand, is its season.

The Season That Asks You to Stay

As the mornings cool and the light gentles, something shifts in us.

I have noticed it every year since I made Australia my home, this collective exhale that comes when the heat finally breaks. When the air turns, the body turns with it. We reach for heavier things. A warmer layer. A quilt that has a little more weight to it than the one we used through summer.

For those of us here in Australia and across the water in New Zealand, where the seasons turn with equal beauty May is the month when the home becomes something we return to differently. Not just as a place to sleep and leave again. But as a sanctuary. A place to be in, not merely pass through.

This is the season that asks you to stay.

And I find, with every passing year, that the things I want to surround myself with during these months matter more to me than they ever did before. Not more things. Richer ones. Pieces that carry meaning. Objects that feel as though they came from somewhere, made by someone, and arrived in your home with the quiet dignity of something that took time.

What Griham Means for How We Make

We have always believed that what you bring into your home should carry a story.

That belief is not incidental to what we do at Lets Earth. it is what we do. From the very beginning, when this idea was still just a quiet hum in the back of my mind, I knew that any piece we made had to travel well. Not just in kilometres, from our Jaipur studio to our Sydney home and out across Australia and New Zealand, but in meaning.

Our anchor in Jaipur is Andy, our brilliant niece and the most meticulous person I know. She lives and works amongst our artisans every day, translating Lets Earth's design sensibility into the ancient generational language of the craftspeople whose workshops have been producing textiles for centuries. It is Andy who holds the relationship between our vision and their hands. And it is a relationship built on deep, mutual respect.

When I think of griham, of home, of the feeling of arriving, I think of Andy's workshop in Jaipur. Because that is where every piece we make begins its journey to yours.

The wooden dabu blocks, hand-carved with patterns that have been passed through families for generations. The mud-resist paste, mixed by hand from clay, gum, and natural ingredients. The fabric stretched out to dry in the Bagru sun, the colour deepening slowly, naturally, the way that good things always do.

None of this is fast. None of it was ever meant to be. And that, we believe, is precisely what gives it its weight.

The Art of the Slow Home — Why This Season Is Different

Slow living is not a trend. It is a memory of how we were always meant to be.

I am often asked what slow living means to me, and my answer changes slightly each time, because I think the honest answer is that it is less a philosophy and more a practice. A daily decision. A series of small choices about what you bring close and what you let go.

In May, that practice becomes easier somehow. The season cooperates. The cool mornings and the long evenings invite you naturally into a different rhythm. You light a candle. You make something on the stove that takes an hour. You pull the quilt up and feel, for a moment, completely arrived.

It is in this spirit that we craft everything at Lets Earth. Our cotton velvet quilts and throws are not made to be impressive from across the room (though they are that, too). They are made to be felt. The weight of the cotton velvet. The way the dabu-printed reverse side catches the light differently depending on where you place it. The slight variation in the pattern from one block press to the next, the beautiful, human evidence that something real made this.

These are not pieces produced to a quota. They are crafted in small batches, by artisan hands that have spent a lifetime learning this craft, and they carry that lineage into every corner of your home.

That is the slow home. Not perfectly curated, but deeply, quietly alive.

This is the season that called for more drape. More weight. More of the feeling that the bed is a place worth staying in.

We have been listening to our community with great care over the past months, and what we heard, over and again, was a longing for something more generous. A velvet quilt that falls past the mattress edge. That drapes all the way to the floor. That makes a bed feel dressed rather than simply covered.

So we went back to Jaipur. We sat with our artisans and reworked the dimensions of our Queen size. We kept every element that you told us you loved, the cotton velvet, the reverse dabu print, the natural cotton filling, the unhurried construction, and we added thirty centimetres of length. The result is what we are calling the Luxe Queen: 210 × 240 cm of slow craft, crafted in a small batch for those of you who have been asking.

It is available now on artisan-direct pre-order, with mid to late May dispatch from our Jaipur studio and delivery from our Sydney home to yours shortly after.

For those who have been considering the King, our Cotton Velvet King Quilts are also available, in the same hand-crafted, dabu-printed cotton velvet that has made our quilts the most reached-for thing in so many homes across Australia and New Zealand this season.

Not everything we love lives inside four walls.

Our Velvet Kimono Coats have become, quietly, one of the most loved things we make. And I think I understand why. They carry the same spirit as our home pieces: the dabu-printed cotton, the slow craft, the generational artisanship but they travel with you. From the bedroom to the kitchen to the morning walk, and somehow back again.

In May, when the air has that particular quality cool enough for a layer, warm enough to be outside the Kimono Coat feels exactly right. It is the piece that says: I have thought about what I put on today. I chose something made with care. And I am in no particular hurry.

Each coat is hand-crafted by our artisans in Jaipur, block-printed in traditional dabu technique, lined with the reverse-print cotton that gives every piece its characteristic inside story. They are made in small batches, limited runs and they tend to find their people before they even arrive with us.
